Supreme Court Ruling Prompts Governors to Schedule Local Government Elections

At least 13 governors have announced dates for local government elections in their states following a recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local government councils.

The court ruled that state governors cannot hold funds allocated for local government councils and that local governments should manage their own funds. The judgment also emphasized that local government councils can only be recognized with democratically elected governments.

Below are some of the governors who have fixed dates for local government elections in their states:

– Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna – October 19, 2024
– Usman Ododo of Kogi – October 19, 2024
– Bala Mohammed of Bauchi – August 19, 2024
– Katsina State – February 15, 2025
– Osun State – February 2025

The local government elections will see the election of chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, and councillors in the respective states. The electoral commissions in each state have assured of transparent, fair, and credible electoral processes.
