The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported on Monday that 13 individuals lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries in a tragic auto crash in Kogi State. Samuel Oyedeji, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Kogi, revealed that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The accident involved a collision between a commercial Sharon Bus and an articulated Cement Truck near Obajana Market along the Obajana-Lokoja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State. According to Oyedeji, the Sharon Bus had stopped behind a truck in the market to allow passengers to make purchases when the cement truck, due to brake failure, collided with it from behind.

The impact of the collision caused the Sharon Bus to catch fire, resulting in the tragic loss of life for most of the passengers onboard. Additionally, the bus itself, two trucks, and a motorcycle were engulfed in flames.

Despite the efforts of FRSC personnel, Red Cross Nigeria, and police officers who were on rescue operations, the intensity of the fire prevented them from saving the victims. The charred remains of the deceased were collected from the scene, while the two injured individuals were taken to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for medical treatment.

Oyedeji expressed concern that no hospital in Kogi State agreed to accommodate the charred bodies, which may necessitate a mass burial if no relatives claim them.

Describing the incident as “very sad and unfortunate,” Oyedeji cautioned motorists against speeding and neglecting proper maintenance of their vehicles. He emphasized the importance of conducting thorough checks on vehicles before embarking on journeys to prevent road crashes.
