Elishabawa Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have established a cordon around the residence of the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, situated in Wuse, Abuja.
The action by the EFCC follows recent revelations that the former governor engaged in discussions with President Bola Tinubu at the State House. Currently, movement in and around the premises located at Benghazi Street, Wuse Zone 4, in the nation’s capital is restricted.A reliable source has confirmed the imposition of barricades by EFCC personnel, as depicted in photographic evidence showing the closure of access routes to Bello’s residence. While specific motives behind the anti-corruption agency’s intervention remain undisclosed, it is speculated that it could be linked to the ongoing N84 billion fraud case involving the former governor, which the EFCC is diligently pursuing.
In an amended charge, the EFCC alleges that Bello diverted N80 billion in state funds in September 2015, prior to assuming office. Furthermore, the commission previously arraigned Bello’s nephew, Ali Bello, before the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of money laundering amounting to N10 billion, purportedly belonging to the state government. In response to these charges, the State Government has vehemently refuted the allegations, denouncing them as baseless and incredulous. They argue that Bello was not in a position to access or misappropriate state funds at the time in question.
Additionally, the State Government has criticized the EFCC, accusing it of deviating from its mandate and aligning with interests contrary to the government’s anti-corruption objectives. This sentiment was expressed in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications on behalf of the State Government.
Despite the charges, former Governor Bello remains at large, as stated by the EFCC. However, individuals present in court, including Ali Bello and Dauda Sulaiman, have entered pleas of not guilty to the allegations presented against them.
