The arrest of Bobrisky, a popular cross-dresser, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos State has caused a stir. According to the EFCC spokesman, Bobrisky was arrested for allegedly mutilating naira notes, an economic crime, rather than for his lifestyle as a cross-dresser.

The Nigeria Police Force previously stated that it lacked sufficient evidence to arrest Bobrisky for alleged same-sex activities, highlighting that cross-dressing itself is not a crime under Nigerian law. Despite calls for Bobrisky’s arrest from certain quarters, the police emphasized the need for credible evidence to prosecute individuals.

It’s worth noting that Nigeria has laws against same-sex activities, with the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill criminalizing public displays of affection between same-sex couples and imposing severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences, for various activities related to same-sex relationships.

Bobrisky’s arrest has sparked discussions about the intersection of legal and social issues surrounding gender expression, LGBTQ+ rights, and law enforcement practices in Nigeria
