In recent developments from Ibadan, Ayanwale Rofiayat, a participant in the controversial Yoruba Nation agitation and among those involved in the recent storming of the Oyo State House of Assembly and the Governor’s office, has disclosed that the orchestrators of this invasion had promised to lift her and her family out of poverty. This breach, which saw the Yoruba Nation flags hoisted over the assembly building last Saturday, has been vehemently condemned by the Oyo State Government, labeling it as a treasonable felony. during a police roundup at Eleyele in Ibadan, Rofiayat, along with 20 others, was paraded before the media. Police displayed a cache of items including security jackets, torchlights, bells, horse tails, walkie-talkies, portraits of Modupe Onitiri Abiola, various belts, Yoruba Nation flags, an Oodua Nation coat of arms, live cartridges, camouflage uniforms, and other materials. Speaking at the event, Rofiayat, who hails from Igbo Ora in the Ibarapa zone, recounted the promises of empowerment and a secure future made by the sponsors of the movement.

In related statements, another suspect, Mr. Alabi Ogundeji, a 55-year-old lecturer, spoke of broad support for the movement across Yoruba-speaking states, and how leaders had sent out official communications to these areas. Despite the arrest, Ademola Adeniyi, a 29-year-old phone repairer, expressed no regret over his actions, citing widespread hardships in Nigeria.The State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebola Hamzat, emphasized the severity of the act, affirming it as a clear case of treason and terrorism, with strict legal actions to follow. Meanwhile, Governor Seyi Makinde praised the quick response of the security forces which effectively quelled the disturbance, stressing the importance of maintaining peace.

As the situation unfolds, the Yoruba Council of Elders has denounced the invasion as a coup, urging strong governmental actions against the perpetrators. At the national level, voices like former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Bode George, and Jamiu Abiola, Special Assistant to the President, have spoken out against the agitators’ methods, advocating for unity and lawful practices.Amidst these tensions, a youth group from the Yoruba Nation movement maintains their stance as a legitimate, non-terroristic group seeking self-determination.
