Chad’s newly elected president, Mahamat Idriss Deby, has assumed office following his inauguration to succeed his late father after serving three years as an interim leader during military rule in the northcentral African nation.

Subsequently, Allamaye Halina has been announced as the new prime minister, following the resignation of Succes Masra from the position earlier this week.Addressing attendees at the inauguration ceremony held in the capital city of N’Djamena on Thursday, President Deby acknowledged those who did not vote for him, emphasizing his respect for their choice as a vital aspect of democracy.

President Deby secured a significant victory with 61 percent of the vote in the contested elections held earlier this month, although international NGOs have raised concerns about the credibility and freedom of the electoral process. Deby assumed the role of transitional president in April 2021 following the death of his father, Idriss Deby, who had ruled Chad since a coup in the early 1990s.

He received swift endorsement as transitional leader from the international community, particularly France, which has historically maintained a military presence in its former colonies. France currently has 1000 soldiers stationed in Chad. The swearing-in ceremony on Thursday marked the end of three years of military rule in Chad, a nation rich in oil but plagued by poverty, with some viewing it as solidifying a Deby dynasty and consolidating power within the ruling clan and its allies.
